Jan Peacock has lived at Tudor Village for four years and couldn’t be happier. She is busy, socially connected, and loving life. But if you had asked her four years ago, retirement living was the last thing on her mind.
“I had lived for more than 35 years in Queensland, although I grew up in Boronia,” Jan explains. After her husband Dennis passed away in 2020, Jan returned to Melbourne to care for her sister, Trish. When Trish also passed away in early 2021, Jan found herself at a crossroads without a permanent home. Her son suggested a fresh start, but Jan was initially resistant to the idea of a retirement village.
“I told my friends no way. I thought I was too young and it wasn’t for me,” Jan says. However, after a reluctant visit to Tudor Village with her sister Judy, her perspective shifted instantly. The tree-lined streets and established feel of the community resonated with her. “It immediately felt like coming home,” she recalls.
After touring several over 55s communities in the area, Jan kept coming back to Tudor Village. She secured a modern, new villa that offered the perfect "country feel" without being isolated. Her home is a spacious two-bedroom plus study villa featuring open-plan living and private patios, perfect for her active lifestyle.
Jan’s life is now richer than ever. As a self-described "people person," she has fully embraced the senior social activities available. “I’ve joined the social committee, I help organize Friday happy hours, and I love our ‘Tipsy Tuesday’ gatherings,” she says. Between Tai Chi, line dancing, and volunteering as a Visitor Host at Healesville Sanctuary, Jan’s calendar is always full.
One of the greatest retirement village benefits Jan has discovered is the freedom to explore the world. Having spent years tied to a farm and a family business, she is now making up for lost time. Alongside her travel buddy and fellow resident, Norma, Jan has already trekked through Borneo and toured Italy, Greece, and South Africa.
“I love that I can just lock up and leave,” Jan says, noting the peace of mind that comes with a secure independent living environment. With upcoming trips to Amsterdam and Budapest, she knows her home is safe while she explores the globe.
Jan’s advice for those considering downsizing in Melbourne is simple: “Come in early. Don’t leave it too long. The sooner you move in, the more you will get out of the social activities and friendships. Moving to Tudor Village was the best decision I ever made.”
